Gold and the Face of the Sun

img_8758.jpg

I re-started working on the Geomantic Man painting, which is so big that I can barely manage to move it around the studio on my own. I have never been satisfied with the face, and now I want to change some of the symbols to more accurately present what I was not certain of before. I’d like to have the circles at his hands contain symbols that relate to the position of the sun in those positions on the horizon, so in the NE corner the symbol is for summer solstice sunrise; in the East, equinox sunrise; in the SE, winter solstice sunrise; in the SW, winter solstice sunset; in the West, equinox sunset; and in the NW, summer solstice sunset. The symbols about the circle are a different matter and I’ll get to them later.

Tree branches

Lukas has continued his work building my tree for the show in Santa Barbara – it’s looking good so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing the spirals get onto the ends of the branches. The spirals will be copper coils, while these aluminium pieces will be painted cream, then wrapped gently in christmas lights and soft cream fabric.

The copper spirals will also go onto the ends of the feet of the tree, and smaller ones will add to the shape of the branches above. Can’t wait to see the whole tree!

There isn’t a great deal more to do apart from getting the lighting right, and the guys need to make some crates for the actors to use as furniture.

The raindrops of the sun, golden tears

I’ve spent an improbably long time painting these drops and the circle of the sun with white gesso, preparing the ground for the red bole primer then the gold leaf. I’m looking for enough gesso that can be sanded down to a smooth surface in this piece, particularly the surface of the sun itself. The monad (circle with the point) will be pure clean gold, representing the purity of spirit sought by philosophical alchemists. The teardrops look excessively bright right now, but they’re going to get a layer of gold, then a glaze of colour over it to dull them down a bit.

The Marseilles card is sitting in my easel drawer for easy reference; it’s good to see what the old deck looks like and to compare it to my version while I’m working. I enjoy considering my relationship to this long gone designer who I’ll never meet, but feel a close affinity with.

Justice and Temperance are in a small show in Anaheim. Driving down there yesterday to deliver the works took five hours. Coming back took one. Beware of the vicissitudes of LA traffic!

The tree is moving along nicely, thanks to Lukas’ hard work. Here are a couple of pictures of it as it is right now, beginning to take shape. The copper spirals aren’t on it yet, but they’re fast and easy to make, so we should see them in a couple of days. Next step will be to add the lights and fabric to soften the lines, and we’ll be almost finished, then we can pay attention to making the lighting work within the performance itself.

Basing the sun and finding the hand

img_8755.jpgLooking forward through my plans for this day I realized that I would have almost no time for work in the studio unless I got into it right away, so after I ran and did my yoga I got straight to work on the Twins piece, which I am enjoying already. I had wondered if the boy on the left should have a hand in front of the one on the right and initially left it out, but then decided that the hand was important after all, so I redrew the forearm to raise the hand higher on the chest, over the heart. I see the painting as the moment that the elements are combining to make the stone, represented by the sun above, so I want to capture a moment of drama as the process is just beginning. His hand over the heart of the twin on the right will be causing a glow to emerge from his chest as the combination begins.

I began gessoing the sun, which will need multiple layers before I’m able to put down the red layer and finally gild it. It’s nice to be able to do this now instead of at the end, planning ahead properly is paying off! On the other hand, spontaneous creativity should be indulged too.

I’m going to Santa Barbara this afternoon to work on the tree and meet with Mitch and the Prop master, Garcia. I’m enjoying the process very much, wish I had more time to dedicate to it. Fortunately Lukas the Technical Director is very responsible and enjoying the work, so I don’t have to freak out about it.

Just heard from Letitia at the Simi Valley Mall (remember the Alchemy Tree project?). She wants me to produce another installation for Earth Day, so I have to meet her next week to see what the theme is this time. Looking forward to that.

Twins

img_8753.jpgI started on a new piece today, the Twins. I’m pretty excited to get started on more of the series of cards, and getting deeper into understanding the imagery contained in them. This one is particularly alchemical, using an image that’s found repeatedly in early alchemical illustrations, with the condensation of the distillation falling from the sun, which is a symbol for alchemical gold, or the fifth element.

I’m planning on doing the image of the sun as a circle with a point within it, but probably in gold leaf over a gesso surface. This is straight out of Pythagoras’ view of the universe expressed in numbers.

You’ll notice that this is the panel I’d started working for the painting of the pregnant lady. She has become the victim of prioritization, I fear. I really enjoy the tarot card project and I want to finish it sooner rather than later, so I decided to keep moving with the project rather than getting sidetracked.

Lights and Metal

I spent the afternoon looking for metal pieces that would help with making the tree build go more easily. At IMS (Industrial Metal Supply) there’s an amazing assortment of materials and useful bits and pieces for metal work, and I love to visit if only to browse and have ideas about what I might make from these wonderful things. Today I found some very cool grating and some circular decorative steel pieces which will be perfect for the tree structure. I haven’t yet designed the heart of the tree, so I want to focus my attention on that in the oncoming week. I am very interested in using LED lighting for the tree, but there are some problems with this, because they tend not to be dimmable, so they’re not that great for performance applications. Maybe Christmas tree lights will be better after all.

Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to getting into the studio tomorrow, drawing and painting.

Skull logo for the theatre piece

skullstensil2.jpgOn the crates that are going to be in the play for the factory scenes we need to have a corporate logo for the evil peach packing company that plans to destroy the magical and wonderful family tree that produces the best peaches ever eaten. Because the play is set in Mexico / California and is bi-lingual I thought we’d refer to Aztec culture for the image, which is called miquiztli.

My plan is to use muted colours so the logo isn’t smack-on-the-forehead obvious.

Trumps

marseilles19.jpg  marseilles17.jpgI’ve been shooting photos for reference for new paintings, intending to continue building my own painted collection of tarot card trumps. I have reference shots for The Lovers, The Sun, and The Empress. I decided to reshoot the pictures I took of Jen for Strength, because I think I can do better. I’m not posting my reference shots here because I promised my models I wouldn’t. My son Ethan posed for both of the twins image on the Sun card, then I put them together in Photoshop. Christine posed for the Empress, and her sister for the Star. When I can get back into the studio more effectively I’m going to be BUSY.

Here’s a worrying thought: I painted two cards this year. Perhaps I can paint six cards a year if I’m lucky. There are twenty two major arcana in the tarot deck, so it will take at least three more years to get the whole lot done, and a couple of cards left over! Better get a move on.

Justice and Temperance

img_8751.jpgI spent a few productive hours in the studio despite guilty feelings that I really ought to get on with some administrative work that I need to catch up with, and the nagging sensation that goes with the theatre piece. Because of the distance and workload here in Thousand Oaks I have to depend on the crew in Santa Barbara to make the project, so I can’t get my hands on the pieces as much I would normally like. I have complete confidence in the guys, mind, but I don’t like not getting into the build myself.

Temperance got most of the work today, including her hands and bottles, some cleanup on the jacket, which really benefitted from the changes I made. I added some zinc white highlights to the trousers and to the stream of liquid, then fixed the bottles by adjusting the size of the golden one up high, and the area about the hand on the silver one. She’s nearly finished!

Justice got a layer of Titanium white over everything, dropping the blues back into the paint a lot and making her appearance much softer. I also gave her a haircut! It was far too bushy before, now she looks more chic. Her sword will need a little more attention to make it more metallic, and her feet need to get some flesh on them. I really like the way the robe looks now, it’s far more ethereal and drops back into that white background, making her almost ghostly.

I heard from the Brand Gallery to arrange a meeting to discuss who will put what work where in the space, so I’ll be traveling to Glendale at the end of February to visit the gallery and meet the other artists in the show. I’m looking forward to this one very much.

img_8752.jpg  I saw a group of Indian women pass by my office this afternoon, so I nipped out and caught up with them and asked if one of them would model for me for the painting. They obviously thought I was completely barmy! I really need to find a model for that piece, some things are too clearly sent from somewhere else to miss.

I have to spend some time today working on he design of the play, making a logo for the wicked peach canning company that intends to steal the magical, but ghostly tree possessed by the heroine of the piece. By the way, if you’re anywhere near Santa Barbara you’ve got to come and see the play when it’s up (end of this month) because it’s so beautifully written that you can’t fail to like it… and I designed it…
