At the end of the day we managed to get about six hundred of the bottles in the air, mostly thanks to help from CLU student Bret Bays, who worked with me to tie together clusters of bottles for Pablo to hang on the branches. We should finish Monday afternoon. A nice surprise that I didn’t expect was the large number of people who asked us what we were doing and were very appreciative. We’re going to have to put signs up to describe the process.
I think the installation would look incredible with another thousand bottles, but I guess we have to follow the rules. There aren’t enough bottles to suspend from each branch, so I’ve chosen to arrange them roughly in a solar cross.Â
Jason Redmond, a photographer from the Ventura County Star, showed up to shoot pictures for the paper, so I’m hoping an article will show up soon. He’s a great shooter; he did a story on my life drawing class a year ago.
I’ve become very aware of using water bottles as a result of this project. We really need to stop using these things. If every family is using an average of 836 bottles a year, imagine what this looks like multiplied by the population of Los Angeles! Pretty scary. We need to get those filter things that attach to the tap and get in the habit of drinking from re-useable bottles.Â
